I Do Not Want Anger to Decide What I Do With Power

AL-HALEEM, teach me to slow down when anger makes power feel deserved. Do not let my strength become an excuse to humiliate someone weaker than me. Help me remember You before I use what I can do against another person.

Abu Mas‘ud al-Ansari described a moment he did not make flattering. He was striking a servant when he heard the Prophet ﷺ behind him reminding him that Allah had more power over him than he had over the person in front of him. Abu Mas‘ud dropped the whip. In another wording of the report, he freed the servant for Allah’s sake.

The lesson is uncomfortable because anger often feels most convincing when there is a real imbalance of power. You are the parent. The manager. The older sibling. The person paying. The one with the louder voice, the stronger body, the password, the keys, or the ability to make somebody’s day difficult.

Some harm does not begin with hatred. It begins with a person feeling entitled to make another person absorb the frustration of the moment. That is why accountability must arrive before anger becomes a story about what they deserved.

Having power does not tell you how Allah wants it used.

When you feel yourself becoming frightening merely because you can, notice that moment before you explain it away. Lower your voice. Put down what is in your hand. Leave the room if staying will make you cruel. Return when you can speak without using fear as a shortcut.

AL-MUQTADIR, You are The Powerful. Make my awareness of Your power greater than my attachment to my own. Let repentance reach my behaviour, not only my regret. Ameen.
