They Call You Modest. Your Tongue Knows There Is Still Work to Do.

Sometimes the compliment lands badly because you know what it cannot see.

People call you modest because of what you wear. They praise your hijab, your loose clothing, or the way you carry yourself in public. Yet you remember the conversation where you repeated something that was not yours to share. You remember the sharp reply, the private contempt, the message written to make someone feel small.

Outward modesty matters. So does the character that walks underneath it.

Do not use this realisation to belittle hijab, and do not use hijab to avoid the work of the heart. Let the visible practice become a reminder rather than a certificate. If your clothing says you are trying to protect boundaries for Allah, let your tongue learn boundaries too.

Before repeating a story, ask whether it is yours to carry. Before correcting someone, check whether you want to help or simply win. Before making a cutting joke, remember that adab does not become optional because the room finds you funny.

Salah gives you regular places to notice the gap between the person people praise and the person Allah knows completely. That gap does not need performance. It needs honesty, tawbah where you have wronged someone, and changed behaviour where an apology is not enough.

A modest wardrobe should not make you feel superior. It should make hypocrisy in your own behaviour harder to ignore.

You do not have to become suspicious of every compliment. Receive kindness with gratitude, then return the praise to a private question: what part of my character still needs covering from pride, gossip, cruelty, and attention seeking?

Let modesty reach your speech as sincerely as it reaches your sleeves each day.
