WHEN THE PARENT WHO CARRIED YOU STARTS NEEDING YOUR HANDS

There is a quiet ache in realising that a parent who once organised your world now needs help with theirs. It may begin with forms, appointments, medication, shopping, stairs, passwords, or the same question asked twice. Nothing dramatic has to happen for the change to hurt.

You may feel love and grief at the same time. You may be patient one day and frustrated the next. That does not make the relationship meaningless. It means the role reversal is touching places in you that are tender.

Do not reduce your parent to the tasks they now need help with. They are still the person whose history, dignity, habits, fears, and preferences deserve to be seen.

Let your care become ihsan for Allah's sake, not a performance of perfect patience. Speak gently where you can. Repair quickly when you fail. Ask siblings or relatives for practical help instead of silently collecting resentment.

Keep salah from becoming the first thing sacrificed when caring becomes demanding. You need moments in which you are not only somebody's child, driver, organiser, or advocate, but a servant standing before Allah.

There may also be decisions you cannot carry alone. Seek trustworthy medical, legal, financial, or family advice when it is needed. Loving someone does not require pretending you know everything.

And remember that accepting help for yourself can protect the quality of the help you give. Rest is not betrayal. Boundaries are not abandonment when they are made with care.

This season may contain inconvenience, tenderness, fear, laughter, repetition, and barakah all at once.
