I Keep Recommending a Book I Have Never Actually Read.

Someone asks what they should read, and the title comes out of your mouth immediately. You have heard teachers mention it, seen it on shelves, and heard people you trust praise it. But if you are truthful, you have never read enough of the book to know what you are personally recommending.

There is no shame in saying, “I have heard good people recommend this, but I have not read it myself.” That sentence protects the difference between first-hand knowledge and borrowed confidence. Allah warns in Qur'an 17:36 against following what we do not have knowledge of, and Qur'an 49:6 teaches the seriousness of verification when information can affect others.

A recommendation can shape someone’s study, time and understanding. Name the certainty you actually possess. If you read the book, say what you benefited from and what level it suits. If a qualified teacher recommended it, attribute that. If you only know its reputation, say that too. And if the subject is sensitive or advanced, point the person towards someone who can recommend responsibly.

The destination is not to stop sharing beneficial resources. It is to make your speech more precise for Allah. Knowledge has a chain even in ordinary conversation: who said it, who read it, who verified it, who is qualified to judge it. Humility does not make your recommendation weaker. It makes the listener less likely to mistake your confidence for experience you do not have.
