A Du'a for When You Are Trying to Forgive Yourself

You can regret what you did, make sincere tawbah, change your behaviour, and still feel ashamed when the memory returns. Sometimes the sin is no longer happening, but the punishment continues inside your own head.

Accountability matters. If you owe an apology, restitution, honesty or a changed pattern, do what can still be done wisely. But endless self-hatred is not the same thing as repentance. Shame that keeps you hiding from Allah is not helping you return.

Ya AT-TAWWAB, accept my return to You. Do not let my past become an excuse to stay distant from salah, Qur'an, good people or the obedience I am still capable of choosing today.

Ya AL-GHAFOOR, forgive what I sincerely regret, including the parts nobody else knows. Where I caused harm, give me humility to repair what can be repaired. Where reopening the past would create new harm, give me wisdom to stop confusing punishment with responsibility.

Let regret become a guardrail rather than an identity. Make me more careful with other people's dignity, more honest in private, and softer towards those who are genuinely trying to change.

I am not asking to forget the lesson. I am asking to stop living as though my worst moment is the only truthful thing about me.

Let my next choices show that tawbah was more than an emotional moment, especially when nobody is watching and the old path becomes available again.

Bring me back to You without pretending the wrong was small, and without believing Your door is too far from someone who sincerely returns.

Ameen.
