My Teacher Is Younger Than Me, and I Hate How Much That Bothers Me

You sit down ready to learn, then discover the person teaching is younger than you. Something inside tightens. You notice their age before their explanation. You start looking for reasons to feel less teachable, even while the lesson is helping you.

It can be uncomfortable to receive correction from someone whose life looks shorter than yours. Age carries experience, but it does not make every older person the most knowledgeable person in every room. Seeking knowledge for Allah asks you to notice when dignity has quietly turned into resistance.

Adab is not pretending every teacher is beyond question. Reliability still matters. Complex religious matters still belong with qualified scholarship. But humility also means letting sound knowledge reach you without demanding that the person delivering it first satisfy your ego’s preferred hierarchy.

Perhaps the real ache is not their youth. Perhaps it is the feeling of becoming a beginner again. You have spent years being competent elsewhere. Now someone younger can name a gap you did not know you had. That can sting without making the lesson wrong.

Bring that sting back to Allah. Let salah remind you that you stand before Him as a servant, not as the oldest person in the room. Listen carefully. Ask respectfully. Check what needs checking. Receive what is sound. Your age does not become smaller because somebody younger taught you something true.

Being older may give you stories they do not have. Being a student may give you understanding you did not have. Both can sit together.
