When You Realise They Mostly Call Because They Need Something

The message arrives and, before you even open it, your body already expects a request. A lift. Money. Advice. A favour. A problem that somehow becomes yours because you are dependable. You help because you care, but somewhere underneath the generosity sits a quieter ache: would they still remember me if I had nothing useful to offer?

That question can hurt more than the favour itself. Being needed can feel like closeness until you notice how little space there is for your ordinary life, your tiredness, your good news, or your own need for support.

Do not let disappointment harden you into someone you do not want to become. Take it to Allah before resentment writes the next reply. Let your salah remind you that your worth is not measured by how quickly you rescue people. Give when you can give sincerely. Say no when the cost is too heavy. Notice whether fear of becoming disposable is making every yes compulsory.

Then test the relationship gently. Share something about yourself. Ask to meet without an errand attached. Allow silence where you once rushed to prove your usefulness. Some relationships are simply going through an uneven season. Others reveal a pattern when you stop carrying all of the effort.

You do not need to punish anyone to protect your heart. Adab and boundaries can live together. Keep your generosity, but stop offering it as payment for belonging. Your heart deserves relationships that remember you beyond emergencies and errands.
