Salman Saw Worship Becoming Imbalance and Said Something

There is a kind of exhaustion that can feel holy because it came from doing something religious. You miss sleep, keep adding voluntary acts, become harder to reach at home, and quietly assume that the more depleted you are, the more serious your faith must be.

The story of Salman and Abu al-Darda interrupts that idea.

When Salman visited Abu al-Darda, he saw a life becoming unbalanced. Abu al-Darda was fasting and spending heavily from himself in worship. Salman insisted that he eat, then later encouraged him to sleep before rising for prayer. He reminded him that his Lord had a right over him, his own self had a right, and his family had a right. When the matter reached the Prophet ﷺ, he affirmed Salman’s judgement.

This is not permission to make comfort the highest goal. The Sahabah knew sacrifice. It is a reminder that Allah did not ask you to prove devotion by neglecting every other trust He placed in your hands.

Your body can have a claim on your care. Your spouse and family can have claims on your presence. Obligatory worship has its place. Voluntary worship is beautiful, but it does not become more beautiful because resentment, collapse or neglect is growing around it.

If your religious routine is making you chronically harsh, unavailable or unable to fulfil clear responsibilities, do not automatically call the strain piety. Look again. Seek sound guidance where rulings are involved. Adjust with humility.

A balanced life will still require sacrifice. But balance is not spiritual laziness when it protects the rights Allah Himself taught you to recognise.

Give each trust its right, then worship Allah without turning exhaustion into a badge.
