When Your Body Is at the Khutbah but Your Mind Keeps Leaving

You can sit close enough to hear every word and still realise that your mind has travelled through work, family, messages, plans and problems before the khutbah has finished.

Distraction does not always mean you do not care. Sometimes attention is trained to move quickly. A vibration, someone entering, one remembered task, or one sentence can send you into a different conversation inside your head.

Friday gives the khutbah a protected place in the week. Treat that protection practically.

Put the phone away before the sermon begins instead of trusting yourself not to check it. If you can choose where to sit, avoid the place where constant movement pulls your eyes away. Arrive with enough time to settle when possible.

When your mind wanders, do not create another distraction by spending the next minute criticising yourself. Notice it. Return. Five minutes later, return again.

Attention is not proved by never drifting. It is practised each time you come back.

Ask Allah to help you receive what benefits you, but do not turn the khutbah into another performance you must complete perfectly. Listen for one point that reaches your life. Carry it into the afternoon. Let it change one conversation, apology, choice or act of worship.

If caring for a child or another person creates genuine interruption, do not confuse responsibility with casual distraction.

Jumu'ah can become weekly training in returning: returning your eyes from the phone, your thoughts from the week, and your heart toward Allah.

The khutbah does not need a perfectly still mind. It needs a mind willing to come back when it leaves.
