Getting Older Should Not Feel Like Disappearing as a Woman

There can be a strange grief in noticing that the world looks at you differently as you age. Compliments change. Attention changes. Your face changes. Your body changes.

A woman is allowed to grieve change without making youth an idol. You can care for your appearance, health and body with gratitude while refusing to treat ageing as evidence that your value is shrinking.

Your relationship with Allah is not a beauty contest with your younger self. The years can carry knowledge, tawbah, sabr, courage, better boundaries, softer judgement, deeper salah and a clearer understanding of what deserves your energy. None of those need the face you had at twenty-five.

Be careful with the voices that speak about women as though beauty has an expiry date and usefulness follows it. Be equally careful with the inner voice that begins doing the same thing to you. A changed reflection is not permission to insult the body that has carried you through years of worship, work, illness, laughter, loss and ordinary life.

Ageing may ask you to release some identities and receive others. Let that happen without calling it disappearance.

There are younger women who need the steadiness of women further ahead. There are older women still beginning new acts of worship, learning, service and repentance. There is no age at which returning to Allah becomes less meaningful.

You are not becoming less of a woman. You are becoming a woman with more years behind her and, by Allah’s permission, more truth about what lasts.
