You Can Love Them Without Becoming Their Only Lifeline

When somebody you love is struggling, every unanswered call can begin to feel like a moral failure. You listen late, cancel your own plans, carry their secrets, and tell yourself that setting a limit would mean abandoning them when they need you most.

Compassion matters. So does honesty about what one friendship can hold. Allah sees the care in your heart, but caring does not require pretending you have the skills, strength, or availability to become another person's entire support system.

Make dua for them. Check in. Sit beside them when you genuinely can. Encourage the help, family support, medical care, counselling, safeguarding, or trusted guidance that their situation actually needs. If there is immediate danger, treat safety seriously and seek appropriate urgent help rather than carrying the risk alone.

A boundary can sound gentle: I care about you, and I cannot be the only person holding this with you. That sentence is not cold. It can protect both people from a friendship built on fear, exhaustion, dependency, and promises nobody can sustain.

Notice what your support is producing. Is their circle slowly widening? Are they gaining more suitable help and more ways to cope? Or are you becoming the one person they feel unable to function without? Love should not require you to disappear.

Keep your salah, sleep, family responsibilities, and own wellbeing visible too. You are allowed to be a friend rather than a rescue service. Sustainable mercy is still mercy.
