When Your Faith Is Changing Faster Than the Friendship

Something in your relationship with Allah is becoming more serious, and suddenly an old friendship feels harder to hold. Things you once laughed about no longer sit comfortably. You are protecting salah, speech, modesty or places you choose to be, and you fear that changing will sound like judgement.

You do not need to make your friend a project in order to protect your own growth.

Explain boundaries when they affect shared plans. Say what you can and cannot join without delivering a verdict on their heart. Suggest something else. If they ask a religious question, answer only what you genuinely know and be willing to say, "I am still learning."

Then watch your character while you watch your boundaries. If every new conviction makes you harsher, smugger or eager to expose somebody else's faults, your growth needs humility beside it. You know your own need for Allah's mercy. Let that knowledge soften your voice.

At the same time, repeated mockery, pressure towards what you are trying to leave, or disrespect for your worship should not be dismissed forever as banter. A friend does not have to practise exactly as you do to respect the Muslim you are trying to become.

Some friendships can hold different levels of practice with warmth and honesty. Others may become less close when the habits that once held them together disappear.

Do not keep every friendship at any cost. Do not discard people simply because you changed first.

Let obedience make your boundaries clearer and your character kinder.
