Amani’s Reminders poster about a masjid meeting becoming a contest to win, encouraging shura, adab and support for the agreed community decision.

The Masjid Meeting Was About Service. Why Did Winning Feel So Important?

The discussion began with a real question: what would serve people best? Then voices tightened. Somebody interrupted. Somebody repeated the same point louder. You started preparing your reply while another person was still speaking, and by the end the decision mattered less than proving you had been right.

Community work can expose the ego precisely because the cause is good.

You may be defending a sensible idea. You may have more experience. You may even be correct about the practical problem. None of that makes sarcasm, dismissal or contempt part of the amanah.

A meeting about the masjid is still a place where your adab matters before Allah. Shura is not a performance in which consultation ends once your preferred answer is challenged. Listening can be sincere even when your position does not change. Disagreement can remain firm without making another Muslim feel foolish for speaking.

Notice what happens inside you when the room chooses differently. Do you withdraw warmth? Do you hope the plan struggles so your warning will be remembered? Do you retell the meeting afterwards until people know who “really understood” the issue?

That is the moment to protect the brotherhood, not only the proposal.

Sometimes the clearest sign of sincerity comes after you lose the point: you still help the agreed plan succeed, because the people being served matter more than proving your prediction was right.

Make the decision carefully. Record responsibilities clearly. Raise genuine concerns. Then let the argument end where the meeting ends. Keep the salaam. Keep fairness. Keep enough humility to discover later that somebody else saw something you missed.

SERVING ALLAH IS BIGGER THAN WINNING THE ROOM.

Leave the meeting with your principles intact and another Muslim’s dignity intact too.
