You Were Not Chosen for the Role, and It Hurt More Than You Expected

You told yourself you only wanted to help. Then the message came, somebody else had been chosen, and the disappointment landed with more force than you expected.

Now every good thing they do feels slightly personal.

You notice who congratulates them. You compare experience. You remember the hours you already gave. Part of you starts searching for reasons the decision was unfair because admitting “I wanted to be chosen” feels uncomfortable in a community space.

That honesty can be useful.

Ikhlas is not proved by pretending you feel nothing. It is protected by what you choose to do with the feeling once it is visible.

Wanting responsibility is not automatically arrogance. Some roles genuinely fit our skills, and being overlooked can hurt. But service for Allah cannot depend on receiving the title that proves other people saw your value.

Let the disappointment show you what your heart had attached to the role. Was it the work itself, the chance to benefit people, the recognition, the influence, or a mixture of all four?

You can ask for constructive feedback without campaigning against the person selected. You can step back if you need a little space without turning every future decision into evidence that you are unwanted. You can keep your salah, your character and your willingness to do good outside the position you hoped for.

And if the chosen person does well, let yourself say so. Their competence does not erase yours.

A community needs leaders. It also needs Muslims whose sincerity survives being unseen, unselected and still capable of wanting good for the work.

A TITLE CAN BE WITHHELD WITHOUT YOUR WORTH BEING WITHHELD.

Let the hurt become self-knowledge, not resentment towards the person who was chosen.
