Abu Dharr Was Corrected for the Words He Used

It is uncomfortable to discover that something ugly can survive inside a person who sincerely believes.

Abu Dharr once insulted a man by referring to his mother. When the Prophet ﷺ heard what had happened, he did not soften the correction because Abu Dharr was a Companion with faith and sacrifice behind him. He told Abu Dharr that there was still a characteristic of jahiliyyah in him, then taught him how those under a person’s authority should be treated with dignity.

That moment matters because we sometimes imagine spiritual growth as a clean line. We think that if we pray, learn, give and love Allah, then prejudice, arrogance, colourism, tribalism or cruel speech should already have disappeared.

Then one sentence exposes something.

The right response is not to protect the image of yourself as a good Muslim. It is to let correction reach the part of you that still needs reform.

A person can have real iman and still carry an inherited attitude that Islam is calling them to remove. Sincerity becomes visible in what happens after the truth reaches you.

Notice the joke you keep defending. Notice whose accent you imitate. Notice whose nationality, skin, education or background quietly changes the respect you give them. If someone points out harm, resist the urge to make your intentions the whole defence.

Allah knows the heart, but character becomes visible through words and treatment.

Let the correction humble you without making you hopeless. Make tawbah, repair harm, learn, and change the pattern. The Sahabah were not honoured because nobody ever corrected them. Their lives also teach us what it looks like to receive truth and keep growing.

Do not defend the habit that Allah is giving you a chance to change.
