Amani’s Reminders artwork about childhood homes, family memories and appreciating ordinary days.
Home, family & memory

One day, the house that raised you will stop being a place you can return to and become a place you can only miss.

A childhood home is more than walls; it is the people, sounds and routines that make ordinary days feel safe. Notice home while it is still happening around you.

One day, the house that raised you will stop being a place you can return to and become a place you can only miss.

The smell of food in the kitchen. The stair you could climb in the dark. The sound of somebody calling your name from another room. The seat everybody always chose without thinking.

Right now, it may still feel ordinary.

Just walls. Just routine. Just another home you assume will always feel the same.

But a home is rarely only the building.

It is the people moving through it. The familiar voices. The small arguments. The doors opening. The meals appearing. The shoes by the entrance. The ordinary evenings nobody thought to photograph.

One day, you may walk through that same door and realise the building is still there while the life that made it home has changed.

Maybe the furniture moved. Maybe the people grew older. Maybe everyone built homes of their own. Maybe somebody who once filled a room is no longer there.

And suddenly you understand how sacred ordinary days can become after they are gone.

That is one of the strange griefs of growing up.

Sometimes you do not only miss the people.

You miss the version of the house that held all of you at the same time.

You miss being younger inside those walls. You miss the feeling that everybody could still be found in their usual place.

So while home is still home, notice it.

Sit in the kitchen a little longer. Take the photograph. Ask about the recipe. Listen to the familiar sounds instead of rushing past them.

May Allah place barakah in the homes that still hold your loved ones, preserve the people who make those spaces feel safe, help you appreciate ordinary days before they become memories, and when life changes, leave mercy in what you remember and peace in every heart that longs for what used to be. Ameen.
