You Left the Committee, Not the Ummah

Stepping down can reveal something painful. While you were organising, answering messages, opening doors and carrying the jobs nobody wanted, people knew exactly where to find you. Then you said you needed to stop, and some of the warmth seemed to stop with the role.

It can make you wonder whether you were loved, or simply useful.

A Muslim community should not make belonging depend on unpaid labour, endless availability or how often somebody appears on a rota. Service can be an amanah, but it is not the price of being treated like a brother or sister. The person who resigns from a task still deserves the same salaam, the same concern and the same place in the room.

If you are the one stepping back, do not let hurt turn the masjid itself into something you avoid. Your relationship with Allah was never held together by a committee title. Salah, dhikr and sincere worship still belong to you when the group chat becomes quieter.

If you are the one staying, notice who disappears from your attention once they stop being useful. Ask how they are without asking when they are coming back to help. Let friendship survive the handover. Let gratitude continue after the keys change hands.

Sometimes the deepest test comes after the task is gone: can you still wish the work well when somebody else leads it? Can they honour what you gave without expecting you to remain permanently available? Healthy handovers protect both sincerity and affection. They make room for rest without turning rest into rejection.

Community work is meant to serve people, not consume their belonging.

A ROLE CAN END WITHOUT BROTHERHOOD ENDING.

Keep the salaam, the warmth and the relationship after the responsibility changes.
