I Keep Moving the Number That Would Make Me “Rich Enough” to Give

There was a time you thought, “When I earn a little more, I will be more generous.” Then income changed, life expanded around it, and the number moved. A better salary became a bigger buffer. A bigger buffer became another target. Giving stayed on the other side of “enough.”

This is not about shaming careful saving or ignoring real responsibilities. It is about noticing when “not yet” has become a permanent home for generosity.

You may not feel wealthy because someone else always has more. You may still have goals, dependants, uncertainty and things you genuinely need to plan for. But if your hand can open responsibly now, waiting for a future version of abundance may only teach the heart that whatever it has should first become more.

Sadaqah can interrupt that pattern. Choose what is truly yours to give without harming obligations. Let the amount be honest rather than impressive. Then let shukr ask a different question from lifestyle: not only “What can I add?” but “What has Allah already placed in my hands that can benefit someone else?”

Niyyah matters because the point is not to prove you are generous. It is to refuse the idea that generosity begins only after every personal desire feels secure.

A future increase may create more room, and if it does, you can review what you give. But the heart does not need to wait for a salary milestone before learning how to release something.
